Police still can’t put a name to a face in fatal shooting

WARWICK—The police continue to search for the man who shot three people in their home last week, killing one of them.
Detectives left the crime scene at 43 Warwick Lake Ave. on Sunday after an exhaustive four-day search for clues that took them through every corner of the cape-style house, into the yard and around the neighborhood.
“We had a great deal of materials brought in by our forensics unit,” Deputy Police Chief Mark Titus said of the search.
Though calls continued to trickle in to the Police Department, there are still no concrete leads as to the identity of the shooter.
The police say the gunman entered the house just after midnight Wednesday. When the owner, Caesar Medeiros, 43, confronted the intruder, he was shot in the arm. His wife, Claire, 39, was shot in the leg and Caesar’s brother, Gabriel Medeiros, 35, who was living with the couple, was shot in the chest and killed instantly. The gunman, who apparently sustained a head wound in a struggle, escaped through a back door, the police said.
The police initially described the wanted man as clean-cut, 5 foot 8 to 5 foot 10, with a thin build and red hair flecked with salt and pepper.
They now say the hair color may be inaccurate. “There’s a good possibility that the red hair may be more blood from the wound on his head than from the color of his hair,” Titus said yesterday. The police have declined to say how the suspect sustained the injury.
On Friday, investigators thought they had stumbled on a promising lead when the Cranston police received a call that a man matching the suspect’s description entered an urgent-care clinic on Reservoir Avenue with a head wound. Cranston police rushed to the center, but determined that the patient had in fact injured his head while riding a motorcycle, as he had told clinic personnel.
While that turned out to be a false alarm, Titus said it showed that medical professionals were being vigilant in watching out for the fugitive.
Also over the weekend, the police “continued to talk” to the injured couple — Caesar and Claire Medeiros — about the incident. Both were discharged from the hospital late Thursday and Titus said they have been cooperative in the days since.
Asked if the victims had any known contact with the police prior to the shootings, Titus said he did not believe they had. “I’m not aware of any criminal history of any of the victims,” he said yesterday.
According to online court records, Gabriel Medeiros pleaded no contest in 1998 to one count of conspiracy to manufacture, possess or deliver drugs. He received a three-year suspended sentence with probation.
Now Titus said the police are also trying to “fill in lost time” in the days before the shooting to see if the victims may have had contact with the assailant leading up to the incident.
With the assailant’s whereabouts unknown, Titus said Warwick residents concerned about safety should practice basic crime prevention: lock their doors, activate their alarms and turn on their floodlights.
The police ask anyone with any information about the shootings to call them at (401) 468-4233 or (401) 732-8477.
