WEST WARWICK — The police have gotten no tips from the public since they released information Monday about a hit-and-run accident on Main Street a month ago that seriously injured Glen Reid, 50, of Warwick.

When the police released details about the accident on Monday, Detective Sgt. Scott Amaral cited the ongoing investigation by detectives as the reason the police had not talked sooner about the accident, which occurred on the rainy night of June 5.

On Wednesday, Amaral provided more insight about the department’s delay in releasing information. A witness had seen a car pull into the parking lot of a nearby business that had a surveillance camera, Amaral said. Although detectives had viewed the surveillance video the first or second day after the accident, they requested a copy of it, hoping they could digitally enhance the video and get a better look at that car, Amaral said.

While most businesses with security cameras have access to their own videotapes, this camera was operated by a private security company, Amaral said. It took about three weeks for the police to obtain the video from the company. Once the detectives got that video, they were able to enhance it, but they still could not see details about the car — such as a license plate — that would help in the investigation. That’s when they turned to the public for help, Amaral said.

Asked about a detective’s decision not to release information about the hit-and-run prior to Monday, Amaral said Wednesday: “He didn’t want the suspect to know what kind of car we were looking for or to spook anybody to dump the car. He was hoping to get a license plate [from that surveillance tape].”

Reid was struck about 9:20 p.m. while crossing Main Street in the 900 block.
