WARWICK — A woman sitting in her car in the parking lot of the Super Stop & Shop on Quaker Lane early Sunday evening was carjacked at knife point and driven to Providence where she was raped, the police said yesterday.

The Warwick and Providence police yesterday released store surveillance photos of the assailant and asked for the public’s help in identifying him.

Police said that the man, of slight build and between 20 and 30 years old, entered the store at about 5:40 p.m. wearing a dark tank top, baggy jeans and dark sneakers. He had white T-shirt draped over his left shoulder, police said, and apparently changed into that shirt while in the store.

A short time after entering the store he is seen leaving in the T-shirt decorated with a “Coors Light” logo on the chest.

Warwick Detective Capt. Michael Babula said the man walked up to a car where a woman was sitting in the passenger’s seat with the engine idling while she waited for her mother to buy groceries. He threatened her with a long kitchen knife or steak knife, got behind the wheel and started driving.

According to Babula, the man drove to Roger Williams Park, where he raped the woman. She was treated at Rhode Island Hospital.

The Stop & Shop is located near the West Warwick line in a shopping plaza at the corner of Quaker Lane (Route 2) and Cowesett Road.

Anyone with information is asked to call Warwick detectives at (401) 468-4233 or (401) 272-3121.
