PROVIDENCE –– The Warren man accused of killing his parents and stuffing their bodies into their backyard cesspool waived his right to a bail hearing yesterday morning.
The relatives of James A. Soares Jr. silently watched the thin, handcuffed man from the front rows of the courtroom of District Court Chief Judge Alfred E. DeRobbio. That’s as much contact as they wish to have with Soares.
Assistant Attorney General Maureen Keough told the judge that the relatives wanted a no-contact order issued against Soares. In response, defense lawyer John Lovoy said that Soares “would be desirous of having contact with any family member who wants to have contact with him.”
After the hearing, Keough declined to comment on the no-contact order. The relatives left without speaking to the media.
Soares’ relatives first alerted the local police last month that something was wrong at 14 Baltimore Ave., because no one had heard from Marian or James Sr. for more than a week.
Their concerns led the police to investigate the whereabouts of the missing couple and speak to their 24-year-old son. Despite James Soares Jr.’s statements that his parents had taken off –– leaving behind their belongings, identification and even their vehicles –– the police launched a search at the small ranch house and uncovered the bodies of the couple on July 26. The police believe that the couple had been dead for more than a week when Soares first told officers that his parents had left town.
Soares will continue to be held without bail at the Adult Correctional Institutions for the murder of his mother, Marian, 53, and father, James Sr., 60.
