Frerichs wins easily, Stanley out

WARREN — David Frerichs, the Town Council vice president, was the top vote-getter in last night’s council election, which saw longtime Republican Councilman Christopher Stanley ousted and replaced by Planning Board Chairman John Hanley.
Frerichs, who received 2,791 votes according to unofficial results from poll-watchers, said afterward, “I just want to keep [Warren] an affordable place for everyone.”
There were still 222 absentee ballots outstanding last night – though not all may have been filled out – and they could change the outcome. Besides Frerichs and Hanley, council president Frank Alfano, a Democrat won a seventh non-consecutive term, and brought back Democratic incumbent Louis Rego and independent Councilman Joseph DePasquale. Stanley was closest to Rego and Hanley.
Both Alfano and Rego, who has 10 years on the council, were unendorsed, reportedly because of a dispute over whether to appoint Democratic Town Committee Chair Anthony DaSilva as harbormaster after the 2004 election.
Alfano said last night that he was honored by his reelection. “We’ve got some work to do and I can’t wait to get started.”
