Warren River search is called off
01:00 AM EDT on Wednesday, August 20, 2008
WARREN –– Police and firefighters searched the Warren River for several hours yesterday after an inflatable raft and a child’s life vest were seen in the water.
The raft was noticed around 10:40 a.m. and the life vest was found next to a boat that was moored in the Palmer River, north of the Warren bridge, according to a police press release.
The harbormaster and Fire Department carried out boat searches in the area, checking to see if anyone had fallen into the river. The state Department of Environmental Management and the Coast Guard assisted with the search.
The search was halted at about 3:30 yesterday afternoon. Police Sgt. Roland Brule said late yesterday that no one had been reported missing and the owners of the raft and life vest were unknown.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Etta Smith said that while the search had been called off, radio alerts would be issued to boaters to keep them aware of the situation. Smith said the raft was 8 to 10 feet long.
