Legion is ready to deliver its holiday meals

01:00 AM EST on Tuesday, November 21, 2006

WARREN — With over a dozen turkeys on hand and more on the way, the American Legion Auxiliary is gearing up to provide the East Bay’s elderly, homebound, and needy with hot meals on Thanksgiving Day.

Judy Fardig, of Warren Unit 11, says donations for food and supplies are rolling in, but she still needs help.

“We need people; we need volunteers to clean up,” she said.

The group, assisted by members of American Legion Post 104 and the Warren Association of Vietnam Veterans, will also serve a Thanksgiving meal at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, on Metacom Avenue, to those who would prefer to not eat alone on the holiday. Anyone wishing to volunteer, donate, or request a meal should call (401) 245-5431.

This year marks the Auxiliary’s 20th year of serving Thanksgiving meals. Fardig says thinking about the area’s needy keeps her going.

“I just worry about these people that are alone, and they just want a Thanksgiving Dinner,” she said.

Warren is not the only town where organizations are looking for volunteer help to get dinners to those who need them. Here is a rundown:

Virginia Dinsmore of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church; the Rev. Bill Taylor of Portsmouth United Methodist Church; the Rev. Paul Hanson of the United Baptist Church; the Rev. Eugene McKenna and Deacon John Croy of St. Lucy Roman Catholic Church; and the Rev. Vincent Thompson Jr. of Community Baptist Church.

The sermon will be delivered by Rabbi Jagolinzer, who recently returned from a trip to New Orleans and will speak about his observations of what he experienced and saw in the city 14 months after Hurricane Katrina.

Music for the service will be provided by the Community Baptist Church Choir, St. Lucy’s Music Ministry and the United Congregational Church Quartet.
