Dr. Paul Lambert had just retired from his obstetrics practice in Fall River in the late 1980s when he and his wife, Louise Lambert, found their reproduction antique-style Cape Cod house in Tiverton.
The house is a bit south of the Tiverton Four Corners historic district, on aptly-named Peaceful Way, overlooking Nonquit Pond.
It was built by Sakonnet Housesmiths, a company headed by local builder Daniel Paquette, they said.
Louise Lambert said she believes their house was one of the first built in the Peaceful Meadows subdivision, and there was a “barn raising” held by the builder to erect the frame.
When the Lamberts bought it, the house was less than 10 years old, although the post-and-beam construction technique gave it the look of an antique.
The house’s weathered-shingle exterior and its pastoral setting, with stone walls and attractive landscaping, add to its country charm. A large chimney rises from the center of the steeply-pitched roof.
But with a modern, open-design kitchen layout on the first floor, along with newer baths and mechanicals, they said, the house has been easy to maintain. The Lamberts said they installed a new oil heating system this spring.
The house sits on a lot that is nearly 1.5 acres. There is an elegant stone patio in the backyard between the main house and the barn/garage outbuilding.
The two-story barn serves as a two-car garage on the ground level. Above is a loft that Louise Lambert used as a studio when she used to paint. The loft could also be used as a living space; it has a kitchenette and a full bathroom.
A large outdoor hot tub is on a deck attached to the side of the barn opposite from the garage doors.
A creek that feeds into Nonquit Pond is on the far end of the backyard.
The back door opens to the open kitchen and living area with wide-pine floors. There are beamed ceilings throughout the first floor.
The kitchen cabinets are painted a soft blue. A set of three windows above the kitchen sink provides a view of the backyard.
The appliances are modern and there is a center island, but the kitchen has a simple, rustic feel.
A family room off the kitchen has white walls and a fireplace fitted with a wood-burning stove.
The first floor also has a formal living room and a separate dining room. There is also a half-bathroom with a red tiled floor and a laundry room on the first floor.
Windows in the dining room, near the front of the house, provide a pastoral view of Nonquit Pond.
Upstairs, the Lamberts have an office area in the hall, and there are three bedrooms, including a master bedroom and two smaller rooms.
The Lamberts, who own another home in Florida, say they are selling their Tiverton house to simplify their life.
In the future, they said, they plan to rent living space when they travel north to visit their children who live in New England.
The house at 86 Peaceful Way in Tiverton is on the market for $575,000. Annual property taxes are $5,482. For more information, contact listing agent Terry Holland at at the T.L.
