TIVERTON — Mail ballots counted yesterday have narrowed Paul E. Carroll’s lead to just six votes in the race for the seventh seat on the Town Council.

The margin could narrow further because 14 provisional ballots have yet to be evaluated and counted by the state Board of Elections.

Town Clerk Nancy Mello said she wouldn’t be surprised if someone asks for a recount in the race. The deadline for requesting one is Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Tuesday night, before the mail ballots were counted, Carroll held a 24-vote lead over the eighth-ranked candidate in the 10-person race, Arthur R. Wyman Jr.

With the mail ballots, the ninth-place candidate, Cecil E. Leonard, is now 21 votes in back of Wyman.

Former council president Claudette J. Linhares, who scored the lowest number of votes, is 326 votes behind Leonard.

The only council candidate whose ranking changed as a result of the mail ballots was John G. Edwards IV. Edwards flipped from sixth place to fifth place after he got 10 more mail votes than Brian A. Medeiros, who was leading him by one vote based, on polling place results.

Council President Louise Durfee garnered the most mail ballots — 126 — with Hannibal F. Costa ranking second with 108.

The tally, including the mail ballots but without the provisional ballots, is:

Joanne M. Arruda — 3,914

Louise Durfee — 3,839

Donald Bollin — 3,686

Hannibal F. Costa — 3,265

John G. Edwards IV — 3,188

Brian A. Medeiros — 3,179

Paul E. Carroll — 3,074

Arthur R. Wyman Jr. — 3,068

Cecil E. Leonard — 3,047

The candidates in the other local races faced no opposition.

Leonard C. Wright, former business manager at the School Department, and Jan W. Bergandy were automatically elected to the School Committee. On the Budget Committee, Arthur E. Moller Jr. was reelected, as were Alexander J. Cote and Daniel Rapoza.

Mello will serve another two-year term as clerk, James P. Amarantes was reelected treasurer for another four years, and Richard P. D’Addario was reelected to another two-year term as probate judge.
