TIVERTON — An eight-year-old girl was hospitalized Sunday evening after she suffered serious head injuries when she fell out of a boat in the Sakonnet River and was struck by the propeller.
The Tiverton Fire Department received a call at about 5:20 p.m. Sunday with a report that a young girl had been injured, Lt. Mark Reimels said. Rescue personnel responded to the Standish Boatyard, off Main Road and south of the Sakonnet River Bridge. The girl had been taken there after the accident.
She was stabilized and transported by ambulance to Hasbro Children’s Hospital, in Providence. Her condition was unclear yesterday.
Reimels could not offer further details about the cause of the accident. He said her injuries could be life-threatening.
“She suffered significant trauma to the head,” he said.
The state Department of Environmental Management is investigating what happened.
