Murder suspect rejects plea deal
01:00 AM EST on Saturday, November 11, 2006
SOUTH KINGSTOWN — A Cumberland woman charged in connection with the murder of a 19-year-old Providence woman last year rejected a plea offer yesterday in Washington County Superior Court, her lawyer, Joseph L. DeCaporale Jr., said.
Under the plea offer, Tawanna N. Sampson would have pleaded guilty to an amended charge of second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder and faced up to 50 years in jail. The 30-year-old would have been eligible for parole after 40 years.
A trial date has been set for Jan. 30.
A codefendant, Shea Cook, 22, of South Kingstown, has not said if he’ll accept the offer.
He will be back in court on Nov. 21.
His lawyer, Kathleen M. Hagerty, declined to comment.
The attorney general’s office plea offer was entered yesterday morning in Washington County Superior Court before Judge Stephen P. Nugent.
In tears, Sampson kept turning to her family as Judge Nugent read the terms of the offer.
“I just want to go home,” she said, bowing forward and covering her face with her hands as she wiped off the tears.
Cook appeared composed, only turning occasionally toward his relatives to gesture he was holding strong and he loved them.
During the proceeding, a man who was sitting by Sampson’s family urged Sampson not to accept the offer, saying, “Hey, Tawanna, stay strong.”
“Yo, hold off. They don’t have nothing on you,” the man said, as court officers escorted him out of the courtroom.
It is unclear if the man was related to Sampson.
Sampson – the sister of Dwayne A. “DA” Sampson, who was shot to death in Providence in June 2005 – and Cook, Sampson’s cousin, were arrested in August 2005 in connection with the murder of Stacy Ann Brissett, a native of Jamaica who also went by the name Jessica Johnson.
Brissett, Dwayne Sampson’s live-in girlfriend, was shot and choked with a rope on Narragansett Indian tribal lands in Charlestown in July 2005. Her body was later dumped in the Yantic River in Norwich, Conn.
Sampson and Cook have been held in the Adult Correctional Institutions without bail since the arrest.
Sampson faces charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, carrying and discharging a firearm while committing a violent crime, carrying a pistol without a license, and possession of marijuana with intent to deliver.
Cook has also been charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and carrying and discharging a firearm while committing a violent crime.
Sampson’s sister, Shonda M. Northup, 26, of Ledyard, Conn., reached a plea deal in May under which she agreed to testify against Sampson and Cook and pleaded no contest to an amended charge of second-degree murder and charges of conspiracy to commit murder, carrying and discharging a firearm while committing a violent crime and carrying a pistol without a license. She is serving a 60-year sentence and will be eligible for parole in 45 years.
The police said they believe the three plotted to kill Brissett to avenge the murder of Dwayne Sampson, who was gunned down outside the couple’s home in Providence’s North End. The police allege the three blamed Brissett for playing a role in Sampson’s killing.
