Girl, 17, hit by alleged drunk driver
10:09 AM EDT on Monday, June 25, 2007
Sylvia Bogusz, 17, was critically injured early Saturday when she was struck by a drunken driver in South Kingstown while standing off the edge of Route 1 near her disabled car, the police said.
Bogusz, who was identified today by South Kingstown police, was airlifted to Rhode Island Hospital with “life-threatening” injuries, according to the police, who said she was listed in critical condition yesterday.
Bogusz, who graduated last week from South Kingstown High School, was upgraded today to serious.
The driver, Heidi L. Harrall, 45, of South Kingstown, was charged with driving under the influence resulting in serious bodily injury, driving to endanger resulting in serious bodily injury, and refusing to submit to a chemical test.
The girl’s car had broken down in the southbound lanes near the Charlestown lines and she was standing next to the passenger side, on the grass, waiting for assistance.
She was struck shortly before 1:30 a.m.
Harrall was driving south at a high speed and lost control of her car after trying to pass another vehicle in the leftmost, high-speed lane on the left, according to the police.
Her car veered back across the two southbound lanes and struck the girl, who landed in the middle of the road, and then the car rolled over, the police said.
The girl was treated at South County Hospital before being flown to Rhode Island Hospital, in Providence.
Harrall was ordered held at the Adult Correctional Institutions pending a court appearance, the police said.
