Verizon Wireless has made a donation through its HopeLine Program to the Domestic Violence Resource Center of South County’s 24-hour Helpline.
Verizon Wireless raises funds for the HopeLine Program by collecting used wireless phones, batteries and accessories, in any condition and from any service provider. Phones that can be refurbished are sold and those that cannot are disposed of in an “environmentally friendly” manner.
Locally, phones may be recycled through Verizon Wireless, 599 Kingstown Rd., Wakefield, or the Domestic Violence Resource Center, 61 Main St., Wakefield.
South County Community Action is looking for volunteers to help process what is expected to be a surge in requests for heating assistance for the upcoming winter, at its offices at1935 Kingstown Rd., Wakefield, and 34 Pond St., Westerly.
Not only does the agency anticipate an increase in applications, but budget cuts have forced it to limit the staff that in the past answered calls and helped families complete heating assistance applications. Last year over 2,200 families in South County received heating assistance through the Federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.
Applications are processed from mid-September through December, and grants are awarded based on income, energy usage, family size and other criteria. Families may use the money they receive to pay oil, gas or electric bills or to purchase wood.
Volunteers may make their own schedules, and will be given orientation and training. For information, call Linda Gilman at 789-3016, ext. 338.
The Journal publishes requests for specific donations from South County charities. If your nonprofit organization needs donations or volunteers, or has services or goods to offer people in need, we will print your request as space permits. Each request can be printed only once.
To be included, send your group’s information, including a name and contact phone number, to scounty@projo.com. Put “Giving” in the subject field.
