• The Ali Dunn Packer Memorial Fund at the Rhode Island Foundation donated $343 to the Jamestown Philomenian Library, where it was used to purchase all 20 of this year’s Rhode Island Teen Book Award nominees.
The 20 books, published between 2006 and 2008, were nominated by the Rhode Island Teen Book Award Committee based on their literary quality and their appeal to teens. Each copy in the Jamestown library contains a bookplate with a photo of Packer, a.15-year-old Jamestown resident and LaSalle Academy student who died in an automobile accident in June, 2001.
• The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of South County, conducted June 27 at South Kingstown’s Curtis Corner Middle School, raised $50,000.
The relay is the Cancer Society’s largest signature event, and funds raised will go to funding cancer control programs, including a research initiative that has supported 42 Nobel Prize winners.
The Journal publishes requests for specific donations from South County charities. If your nonprofit organization needs donations or volunteers, or has services or goods to offer people in need, we will print your request as space permits. Each request can be printed only once.
To be included, send your group’s information, including a name and contact phone number, to scounty@projo.com. Put “Giving” in the subject field.
