The Audubon Society of Rhode Island has listed the results of the fifth annual North American Butterfly Association Butterfly Count for Rhode Island on the Audubon Web site, www.asri.org.
Both amateurs and experts spent June 28 and July 12 identifying all butterflies spotted in a 24-hour period in various areas, including 11 in South County, with a total of 3,521 butterflies and 51 species recorded.
One of the rare finds was the Variegated Fritillary, reported at Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge in Charlestown by Erin King and Suzanne Paton of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
To register for next year’s count, call July Lewis at 949-5454, ext. 3044.
