Theater

Matunuck theater reopens: Theatre-By-The-Sea is opening its box office, at 364 Cards Pond Rd., Matunuck, next week, with tickets available for its production of Stephen Sondheim’s Tony Award-winning musical comedy A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, running Aug. 10 through 26.

Past subscribers only will be able to purchase tickets through Thursday, between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Tickets will go on sale to the general public Friday, and will be available Monday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., as well as online 24 hours a day at www.theatrebythesea.com. The box office is also open one hour prior to every performance.

Performances are scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m.; Wednesday at 2 p.m.; Saturday at 5 and 9 p.m.; and Sunday at 5 p.m. In addition, there will be special Sunday performances Aug. 12, at 3 and 7 p.m., and preview performances Aug. 8 and 9.

Tickets are priced at $39 to $49, and $35 for previews. Discounts are available for groups of 20 or more, with $15 student rush tickets on a limited basis one hour prior to curtain. For tickets and information, call (401) 782-8587.

Granite Theatre: Leading Ladies, a comedy by Ken Ludwig, is at Westerly’s Granite Theatre, 1 Granite St., through July 29.

Performances are at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday; and at 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $18, $15 for senior citizens, and $11 for children. They are available by calling 596-2341.

The Fantasticks will open Aug. 3.

Auditions: The Granite Theatre will conduct auditions for its fall production of A Funny thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, written by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, next Monday and Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The cast calls for 18 people ranging in age from 16 to 60. For information, call 348-0555.

Outdoor performances: Ricardo Pitts-Wiley will present an original stage adaptation of Herman Melville’s Moby Dick on the North Kingstown Town Beach, with performances each evening at 7:30, through Sunday.

The Mixed Magic Theatre’s seventh annual “Bard on the Bay” production is entitled Moby Dick: Then and Now, and was written and directed by Pitts-Wiley. It combines the quest of Captain Ahab and his crew to find and kill the great white whale with the tale of a group of inner city youth “voyaging” through a city to track down and kill their own “Great White Menace,” cocaine and the drug culture surrounding it. The dialogue of Ahab and his crew comes from Melville’s novel, with the urban crew speaking a blend of hip-hop and street slang.

This is a restaging of the production which premiered at the Pawtucket Armory in May, and includes many of the original cast members. It is appropriate for all ages, and audience members are invited to come early and picnic. To reserve space, call 475-6675.

Rumors: An amateur production of Neil Simon’s Rumors will be presented at Westerly Middle School Thursday, Fridayand Saturday at 8 p.m. Admission is $10, $8 for children and senior citizens.

Concerts

Summer pops: The Chorus of Westerly will present “Summer Piano Pops” concerts this weekend, as well as Aug. 4 and 5, and Aug. 25 and 26, each featuring a different mix of classical masterworks, plus arrangements of pop standards and classic jazz piano recordings.

The Saturday shows will begin at 8 p.m. at the Chorus of Westerly’s George Kent Performance Hall, 119 High St., Westerly, with informal piano music at 7. Beer, wine and soft drinks will also be available. Sunday concerts will be at the Watch Hill Chapel, 5 Bluff Ave., Watch Hill, at 4:30 p.m. A donation of $10 will go to the chorus. North Kingstown shows: The North Kingstown Arts Council is sponsoring a series of outdoor summer concerts, each Tuesday at the North Kingstown Town Dock. The lineup includes:

July 24, Black Tie Band with Nancy Paolino, contemporary and top 40; July 31, Bandstand Review, ’50s music; and Aug. 7, Brass Attack, Top 40. For information, call 294-3331, ext. 241.

The Lafayette Band performs each Wednesday, at 7 p.m., through Aug. 8, at the following locations:

North Kingstown Town Beach, July 18 and 25, and Aug. 1; and the North Kingstown Free Library, 100 Boone St., Aug. 8.

Benefit concert: A concert and bake sale Saturday at 3 p.m. at the North Kingstown Town Beach Band Shell will benefit Georgia’s Fund, a fund established to help the family of Georgia Wettergren, a five-year-old North Kingstown resident who was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia in May, and who will require two years of chemotherapy.

Admission is $5, $10 per family.

Concert at church: The “King’s Brass” will perform at Exeter Chapel, 765 Ten Rod Rd., Exeter, Sunday night at 6. A donation of $5, or $10 per family, is requested.

Concerts at Towers: Each Thursday this summer the Narragansett Towers, 35 Ocean Rd., Narragansett, will host live bands providing music for dancing. The lineup includes:

Roger Ceresi’s All Stars, July 19; the Wilders, July 26; Duke Robillard, Aug. 2; Superchief Trio, Aug. 9; “Bio Ritmo,” Aug. 16; Squirrel Nut Zippers and Firecracker Jazz Band, Aug. 23; and Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, with Red Stick Ramblers, Aug. 30. Each concert runs from 7 to 10 p.m. Admission is $10; $15, Aug. 2 and 30; $35, Aug. 23; and free to children under 10.

The nearby Narragansett Gazebo will host concerts by Hardwood Country band, July 20; Gemini, Aug. 3; White Stand Revue, Aug. 17; and Soul Power, Aug. 24, all at 6 p.m.

Outdoor shows: Wakefield’s Marina Park, off of Route 1, will host concerts by John Connors and the Irish Express, July 19; and Roger Ceresi’s “All Starz,” July 26, at 6 p.m.

The Wakefield Civic Band will perform in Marina Park July 23 and 30, and Aug. 6. Each hour-long concert begins at 6:30.

The Peace Dale Village Green, on Columbia Street, is the site of Sunday evening concerts featuring the following performers:

“Sh-Bop,” July 22; “Avenue A,” July 29; Atwater & Donnelly, Aug. 5; the Harwood Country Band, Aug. 12; and “New York Minute,” Aug. 19. Shows begin at 6.

“Blues on the Beach”: Westerly will host “Blues on the Beach,” a series of concerts on the Westerly Town Beach, Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. July 11 through Aug. 22. The lineup includes:

July 25, Al Copley and his Band; Aug. 1, Greg Piccolo; Aug. 8, Roomful of Blues; Aug. 15, Sugar Ray Norcia and his Big Band; and Aug. 22, Johnny Nicholas and the Texas All-Stars. In case of inclement weather, performances will be indoors at the Windjammer Restaurant, on Atlantic Avenue.

Choir rehearsals open: The choir of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church is open to high school students and adults, and rehearses at the church, 55 Main St., Wickford, Thursdays from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., and Sunday at 10 a.m., prior to the morning service. Exhibits

Art association shows: The South County Art Association’s open art annual, juried by Rhode Island School of Design professor of foundation studies Alfred DeCredico, runs through July 28 at the Helme House, 2587 Kingstown Rd., Kingston.

Display at courthouse: Works by 12 local artists are on view through the summer at the McGrath Judicial Complex, on Route 1 in Wakefield.

Artwork by Linda Whyte Burrell, Iris Falck Donnelly, Joanne Friday, Nancy Littlejohn Gray, Deborah Hedison, Diana Norton-Jackson, Mary Kehoe, Barbara Pagh, Joya Maxwell, Judith Speyer, Meredith Swift and Reiko Wimbush will remain on view through Sept. 4. The complex is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Wickford show: The 12th annual “Art of the Ocean State” show runs through Friday at the Wickford Art Association, 36 Beach St., Wickford. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday; and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Members may submit one entry each for the “Belle Fleur” show, judged by Jason Brockert, which will open with an awards reception Sunday, from 1 to 3 p.m. Entries may be submitted from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and 5 to 6 p.m., July 18; and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 19. URI exhibits: To mark the 200th anniversary of the establishment of the Survey of the Coast, NOAA and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service have created an exhibit, “From Sea to Shining Sea: 200 Years of Charting America’s Coasts,” which is on display at the University of Rhode Island Library.

Fourteen resident and visiting members of the University of Rhode Island’s Department of Art faculty will be displaying their work through this month, and again Sept. 4 through 16, in the Main Gallery of the Fine Arts Center, on the Kingston campus.

Summer gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; the gallery will be closed Monday during the fall.

Hera show: Hera Gallery, 327 Main St., Wakefield, presents “Essential Elements,” a national juried exhibition with works selected by Judith Tolnick, director of the URI Gallery, through Aug. 18.

Library exhibits: The Kingston Free Library, 2605 Kingstown Rd., Kingston, is exhibiting quilts made by local resident Steffanie Windus, through July.

The Cross’ Mills Public Library is showing artwork by local residents Jim Griffin and Lynn Manning through August, during regular library hours.
