SOUTH KINGSTOWN — A Bristol man faces a felony domestic assault charge after he allegedly smashed pint glasses into his ex-girlfriend’s head at Casey’s Grill & Bar Monday night.

Officers responded to Casey’s around 11:30 p.m.after receiving a call that a man had assaulted a woman during an argument.

Mary E. Kelly, 28, of 34 Spring St., Westerly, told the police she had agreed to meet her ex-boyfriend, James W. Enos, 35, to return jewelry he had given her. The pair dated from January to early August, according to reports.

Enos became enraged when Kelly, a nursing student at the University of Rhode Island, began talking about work, reports state. Kelly said she got up to leave, fearing might become violent, and that he grabbed her from behind. He then allegedly hit her in the back of the head with empty pint glasses from the table. Witnesses said he punched and kicked her when she fell to the floor before being restrained by the Casey’s staff, according to the police.

Kelly told officers Enos drank four beers that night; she said she consumed half a glass over an hour and 15 minutes.

Enos, 32, 71 Kingswood Rd., Bristol, appeared in District Court the next morning, where he pleaded not guilty to domestic disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor. He did not enter a plea to the domestic felony assault charge, because felonies fall under Superior Court jurisdiction. He was released in personal recognizance, according to the police.
