SOUTH KINGSTOWN — A South Kingstown man is facing charges in an alleged assault on a Westerly man last Friday.

Kevin White, 44, of 248 Holly Rd. in South Kingstown, has been charged with assault and disorderly conduct, both misdemeanors.

Seven officers responded to a report of an assault at 350 Columbia St., near a playground, and found Robert Brown, of 80 Pierce St., Westerly, with wounds — a bite mark on his back and two chipped teeth — that he said were inflicted by White.

Brown, 24, who told police that he had purchased a pug-breed dog from White and still owes him $100, said he was going to an appointment early Friday morning and saw White taking off a jacket and shirt, and waiting behind a building.

He said White charged and punched him in the face repeatedly and once on his side. Brown said White grabbed him in a bear hug and bit him on the upper right portion of his back.

White released him and laughed, Brown told police, and when Brown bent to pick up his hat, White tried to kick him in the head.

Last November White was ordered to stop selling puppies from his home in a dense neighborhood south of Route 1 near the Charlestown line. Neighbors had complained about noise and loose dogs, saying he was running a retail operation.

Zoning in that neighborhood allows White to keep all his dogs — eight pugs, two Bantam bulldogs and a French mastiff — as long as they are licensed, but doesn’t allow him to breed and sell them.

White entered a plea of not guilty in District Court, Wakefield, and a pretrial conference was set for Jan. 31.
