SOUTH KINGSTOWN — A 23-year-old Coventry man died early Saturday after his pickup truck caught fire after hitting a concrete block behind a Kingstown Road shopping plaza.
Police and firefighters responded around 2 a.m. to what was believed to be a trash container fire behind Kasual Kids, a children’s clothing store at 577 Kingstown Rd., Capt. Jeffrey Allen said. They found a 2001 Dodge Dakota fully engulfed in flames.
After extinguishing the blaze, firefighters discovered a severely burned man, later identified as John H. Urwin, near the truck. Urwin, of 169 Princeton Ave., Coventry, was pronounced dead at the scene, Allen said.
A 2001 Coventry High School graduate, Urwin had been bowling with friends at Old Mountain Lanes in the hours before the fire, Allen said.
It is believed that the truck’s gas line ruptured when it hit the concrete pads where the trash bin sits.
