Police force accreditation pursued
01:00 AM EST on Wednesday, November 15, 2006
SMITHFIELD — The Police Department will hold a public information session on Dec. 4 as a step toward reaccreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.
Professional accreditation is “a highly prized recognition of professional excellence in law enforcement,” according to Capt. Robert J. Beaudry.
Accreditation lasts three years. The department was last examined in December 2003. A team of assessors from the accreditation commission is expected to arrive Dec. 2 to take a look at all aspects of the department’s policies, procedures, management, operations and support activities.
As part of the process, department members and members of the public are invited to the information session, to be held at 7 p.m. at the senior center in Deerfield Park.
Those unable to attend may offer comment by telephone on Dec. 4 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. by calling (401) 233-1025. Comments must address the department’s ability to comply with reaccreditation standards, a copy of which is available through Beaudry at (401) 231-2500, extension 35.
Written comments also will be accepted. They should be addressed to Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, 10302 Eaton Place, Suite 100, Fairfax, Va. 22030-2215.
Karen Shepard is the commission’s program manager for Smithfield. The assessment team is composed of Michael J. Kemper of the Kettering Police Department, Kettering, Ohio; David L. Holl of the Township of Derry Police Department, Hershey, Penn.; and Mark Bucalo of the Buffalo Grove Police Department, Buffalo Grove, Ill.
The team will review written materials, interview individuals and visit offices and other areas where examples of compliance can be observed.
For additional information, the accreditation commission may be reached at (800) 368-3757 or (703) 952-4225.
