Yard waste schedule change: Lawn- and yard-waste collection will undergo a schedule change. June 30 through October 3, lawn and yard waste will be collected once a month on the second full week of the month on your regular trash day. Oct. 4 through Dec. 5, lawn and yard waste will be collected weekly. In 2009, the schedule will include weekly collection April through June and October through December with monthly collection July through September.
Yard waste must be in brown paper bags or barrels clearly labeled “yard waste.” Yard waste in plastic garbage bags or cardboard boxes will not be collected. Branches cannot be larger than three inches in diameter and must be cut to lengths no more than three feet long and bundled with twine. A maximum of eight barrels or bags of household trash and yard waste combined is accepted per household. For more information, call (401) 233-1034.
Chowder and calmcake supper: Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 54 Cedar Swamp Rd., will host a chowder and clamcake supper, today at 6:30 p.m. This annual event is open to the public. Tickets are $12, ages 11 and up; $6, ages 5 to 10; and free for children under age 5. For more information, call (401) 232-7575.
Basketball and sports camp: The One-on-One Basketball and Sports Camp will be held Aug. 4 to 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Philip Parish Center, Putnam Pike. Summer session: Smithfield YMCA, 15 Deerfield Drive, is accepting registrations for the summer session which begins Monday. The following classes are enrolling: parent and child swim lessons, pre-school swim lessons ages 3 to 5, youth swim lessons ages 6 to 14, water-aerobic classes, Little Sprouts summer camp for preschoolers, preschool playgroups and enrichment program, arts and crafts camp and cheerleading camp. At the Libraries
Greenville Public Library, 573 Putnam Pike, will host a teen summer reading program Metamorphosis @ Your Library, for teens ages 11 to 17. The program will be held from June 30 to Aug. 16. Teens can win prizes for reading as well as take part in activities offered throughout the summer. Participants who reach the goal of reading seven books over the summer will receive a prize pack and will be entered into a drawing for the grand prize, an MP3 player.
Registration is being held for the children’s summer reading program Catch the Reading Bug, for children age 3½ to 10. The program includes storytellers, magicians, music, crafts, bedtime story times, book buddies, weekly drawing prizes, and incentive coupons. The program will be held from June 30 to Aug. 15. Registration is required for all programs.
The library will host a Year of Entertainment raffle from June 30 through July 21. Tickets are $20. There will be three prizes. First prize will be 12 certificates to the following venues throughout the state and surrounding area: Showcase Theater, Edaville USA, United Skates of America, Slater Mill, Festival Ballet of Rhode Island, Roger Williams Park Zoo, Rhode Island School of Design, Smithfield Ice Rink, Stadium Theater, Rhode Island Philharmonic, Town Hall Lanes and the Providence Bruins. The second prize will be a beach and book bag. The third prize will be a gift certificate to Pepino’s Pizzeria. Proceeds will go to the Library Building Fund. The drawing will be held July 21 at noon.
The mystery book club will meet Tuesday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. The group will discuss Belle Ruin, by Martha Grimes. New members are welcome to attend.
A discussion groups for teens, as part of the summer reading program, will be held at the library. Session will include: Wednesday at 2 p.m., The Boxes, by William Sleater; July 10 at 2 p.m., Epic, by Conor Kostick; July 19 at 11 a.m., Hero, by Perry Moore; July 24 at 2 p.m., Queen of Cool, by Cecil Castelucci; July 28 at 4 p.m., Dread Locks, by Neal Shusterman; Aug. 7 at 4 p.m., Flush, by Carl Hiassen; and Aug. 12 at 4 p.m., Many Stones, by Carolyn Coman.
Teens are invited to learn about hieroglyphs, cartouches, and how to make your own Egyptian scarab-shaped seal so you can write letters to your friends while keeping your identity a secret. The program, for ages 11 to 18, will be held July 3 at 11 a.m.
A summer pen-pal program is being held at the library. Participants will be paired up with a person of a similar age and interest from another town. Complete an introductory letter form, which is available at the reference desk, and return it to the library by July 5.

East Smithfield Public Library, 50 Esmond St., has several programs scheduled, including: Story hour, for children in kindergarten to grade five, will be held Tuesdays at 1:30 p.m. Toddler story time, for children ages 2 to 3½, will be held Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11 a.m. A parent or caregiver must participate.
