SMITHFIELD — Town Clerk Diane L. Ady said yesterday that the town’s usual 10 polling places have been “condensed to five” for the recall election to be held on Tuesday.

Although Monday is Veterans Day, Ady’s office will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the purpose of accepting emergency ballots only. No other business will be transacted.

Ady said that emergency ballots are reserved only for people with a medical problem that will keep them from voting on Tuesday and those who will be out of town during voting hours. Emergency ballot applications for medical problems must be accompanied by a doctor’s note. Ady said people who assert they will be out of town should be truthful, because it is illegal do to otherwise and could result in a misdemeanor charge.

Emergency mail ballots must be received by the State Board of Elections no later than 9 p.m. on Election Day.
