Tentative teachers’ contract reached in Smithfield

SMITHFIELD — The School Committee is scheduled to vote Tuesday night on a tentative contract agreement reached by its negotiators and the town’s teachers union, school and union officials said yesterday.

Representatives from both sides said they were holding off on discussing details of the tentative agreement until the School Committee votes and makes it official. Supt. Robert M. O’Brien said both the School Committee and union negotiators had agreed not to reveal the terms until both sides approved the deal.

School opened smoothly and on schedule Wednesday.

“It’s been difficult across the state,” O’Brien said. “But the teachers have been great. They understand the situation we’re in and they worked with us.”

National Education Association\Smithfield President Michael J. Twohey declined to even say how many years the tentative agreement called for, preferring to keep his remarks general.

“It’s always a good thing to have a tentative agreement,” Twohey said.

He said the approximately 234 members of his union met Tuesday night and approved the deal by a 2-to-1 ratio.
