Cape Verdeans and India Point Park: The Cape Verdean Subcommittee of the R.I. Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission is interested in keeping the Providence waterfront area open to the public. The committee supports the use of public land by future generations of Rhode Islanders and to ensure the preservation of the history and culture of the previously displaced Cape Verdean community in Fox Point.
Cape Verdeans landed in the early 1900s along the Providence waterfront and India Point Park. For close to 100 years, Fox Point was home to three generations of Cape Verdean families. The waterfront was the main livelihood for Cape Verdean longshoremen and their families. Urban renewal, gentrification and the construction of Interstate 195 in the early 1970s forcibly displaced the Cape Verdean community in Fox Point.
At stake, according to the committee, is the community’s access to India Point Park, the location of the first annual Cape Verdean Independence Festival in the United States.
All are encouraged to attend the citywide waterfront public discussion meetings, today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. at the Johnson & Wales Harborside Campus, 265 Harborside Blvd.

The evening will feature audio/video artists, including Aerostatic, Benton-C Bainbridge, Brian Kane, David Lublin, Duncan Laurie, Jeswa, Nalepa, Ooah, Peter Kirn, Richard Devine, RNDM and Robotkid, Synesthete and Unkle Thirsty.
The performance is being held to benefit the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council. Proceeds will go toward fulfilling the mission of the WRWC, which is to encourage, support and promote the restoration and preservation of the Woonasquatucket River Watershed.
Tickets for the all-ages performance are $15, or $10 for students, teachers, firemen, police and military with ID.

Providence Children’s Museum: Littlewoods, the woodland environment for the museum’s youngest visitors, has welcomed thousands of young children and their caregivers during the last 10 years. The exhibit will reopen on Tuesday, June 17, with a new play areas for infants and toddlers, an updated parent resource area and more.
Littlewoods was designed to inspire active exploration and interaction with adults and other children. In its new incarnation, the exhibit features a host of fresh physical challenges as children navigate a wavy floor, explore stepping logs at different heights and cross a new balancing bridge.
Children can send balls traveling through a “root” system and investigate tubes filled with elemental materials. Baby Nest with transparent sides features interactives for curious babies and toddlers to manipulate. Parents and caregivers benefit from an expanded resource area and a comfortable nursing nook. The redesigned exhibit features eco-friendly carpeting and other environmentally sensitive materials in all new additions.
Changes to Littlewoods were inspired in part by a partnership with Early Intervention specialists from Meeting Street school, which advised exhibit updates that serve children with developmental delays and have benefits for all young children. The museum is committed to making Littlewoods an environment that is responsive to all visitors, including those with special needs, and to creating a cozy environment that encourages young children to explore the world around them as they play together.
The following play-and-learn activities for ages 2 to 4 are scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon on the following dates:
•June 17 — Animal tales inspire children to create their own stories as they move animals around the farm.
•June 18 — Imaginative play in a pretend kitchen helps children practice color and shape-matching skills.
•June 19 — Children develop hand-eye coordination and counting skills as they catch colorful paper fish.
Enhancements to Littlewoods was made possible by contributions from the Carter Family Charitable Trust, The Elms Foundation, June Rockwell Levy Foundation, Ocean State Charities and Gina Ogden, plus gifts from museum members and donors.

Ambassadors wanted for visiting filmmakers: Every year, the Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF) hosts hundreds of filmmakers from around the world, most of whom are just beginning their careers and many coming to the United States for the first time when their film premieres at RIIFF. Last year, 250 filmmakers arrived in Rhode Island.
This year’s event will be Aug. 5 to 10. According to Richard Corso, RIIFF’s hospitality manager, families or individuals willing to provide visiting filmmakers with a place to sleep are needed. The filmmakers are responsible for their own transportation and meals.
In exchange for hosting a filmmaker, the RIIFF ambassadors will receive a pass to all festival screenings, discounted admission to the opening night party at the Providence Performing Arts Center and free admission to the filmmaker parties at Bravo and Waterplace Park.
For information, contact Corso via e-mail at RichardC@film-festival.org or call (401) 861-4445.
