PROVIDENCE — Residents are advised to take precautionary measures for the expected arrival of Tropical Storm Hanna, which is projected to hit southern New England this weekend.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather warning in anticipation of heavy rainfall, gusty winds and possible flooding. The Department of Public Works has stocked sandbags and crews are checking storm drains to make sure that they are free of debris. Officials will closely monitor areas prone to flooding and storm surge throughout the weekend to determine if additional steps are necessary, according to the city’s Emergency Management Agency.

The EMA is advising residents to bring lawn furniture, outdoor decorations, trash cans and hanging plants indoors. Residents are also encouraged to check batteries and stock up on canned food, first-aid supplies and medications, the EMA said.

In the event of power loss, the agency recommends that residents use flashlights, not candles.

Other advice from the EMA:

•Stay away from floodwaters; avoid downed power lines and contact National Grid, 1-800-322-3223, if power lines are down.

•Report fallen branches that pose a danger by calling the Fire Department at 274-3344.
