PROVIDENCE — Public school students will return to school on Tuesday with a new superintendent, Tom Brady, five new elementary school principals, one new middle school leader and four new high school principals.

The new principals are: Brent Kermen at William D’Abate Elementary School; Colin Grimsey at Vartan Gregorian Elementary School; Anthony DeAngelis at Pleasant View Elementary; Thomas Bacon at the Woods and Young Elementary Schools; Gloria Jackson at Esek Hopkins Middle School; Regina Winkfield at E{+3} Academy; Catherine Oneppo at Mount Pleasant High School.

The principals’ positions at Classical High School and the Providence Academy of International studies have yet to be filled.

Although no new schools are opening this fall, Hanley Career and Technical Center, also known as the Providence Career and Technology Center, and Nathan Bishop Middle School on the East Side, are undergoing multimillion renovations. Both schools will re-open next fall.

In December, the state approved a $35-million renovation of the middle school and a $40-million expansion of Hanley, which is located next to Central High School. The existing Hanley cafeteria and gym will be demolished and replaced with a 100,000-square-foot addition that will be connected to a new athletic complex. The new Hanley will accommodate 800 students, twice its current enrollment.

Nathan Bishop is undergoing a major reconstruction of all interior spaces, with plans calling for a two-story library and a media center along with numerous energy-savings additions.

The district has an enrollment of 23,850 students, although more students typically arrive during the first two weeks of school.

Meanwhile, the Providence Teachers Union is actively engaged in contract negotiations with Brady; both sides met yesterday. Teachers have agreed to return to school under the terms of the previous contract, which expired last August.
