Man hit by car may have been playing ‘chicken,’ Providence police say

01:00 AM EDT on Monday, June 30, 2008

PROVIDENCE — The police are investigating a fatal accident Saturday in which they said the victim may have been playing a dangerous game of “chicken” with oncoming cars and trucks, by running in and out of traffic.

They are working to identify the victim, who is said to be a male in his 20s and was not carrying a wallet or personal identification when he was struck and killed on Raymond Street, at Davis Park in the Smith Hill neighborhood.

The police identified the driver as Justin Lopez, 22, of 198 Oakland Ave., who was driving south, within several blocks of his house, when the accident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. on Raymond, between Chalkstone Avenue and Valley Street.

“From what the guy was saying, this guy just came running out of Davis Park,” said Fire Department Lt. Joseph Dillon, quoting Lopez. “The guy darted out into the street. He couldn’t stop.”

Firefighters and rescue personnel who responded told the police that witnesses related that the victim was trying to “play chicken” with passing vehicles.

When personnel from Engine Company 15 arrived, they found a man and a woman administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation, according to Dillon, the company commander.

The victim, who was dressed in shorts and a T-shirt, had suffered a severe head injury and was bleeding from the nose and the back of the head, Dillon said. But he had a pulse, so the emergency personnel forced oxygen into his lungs with an air bag rather than continue CPR.

North Providence Rescue Company 1, responding on mutual aid, transported the victim to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“He never regained consciousness,” said Deputy Assistant Fire Chief Henry Cochrane.
