Award: Rep. Steven M. Costantino, D-Providence, chairman of the House Finance Committee, has received the CODAC Behavioral Healthcare Board of Directors Award.
The award is given by the nonprofit organization to recognize an individual who has consistently worked to address the challenges faced by people with substance abuse and mental health problems.
Cranston-based CODAC provides substance abuse and behavioral treatment to thousands of Rhode Islanders each year, with clinics in Cranston, Providence, Newport, East Providence and Wakefield. CODAC also provides education and prevention programs for schools and communities.
CODAC president and CEO Michael Rizzo said Costantino was selected for the honor because of his history of support of substance abuse and mental health programs, through his leadership in the General Assembly and through his former role as administrator of the Providence Medical Healthcare Center. Rizzo praised Costantino for his support of legislation that would require insurers to reimburse treatment for mental health care at the same rate as treatment for other medical issues.
