Cianci scholarships awarded

PROVIDENCE — Thirteen members of this year’s city high school graduating classes have been chosen to receive $1,000 awards from the Vincent A. Cianci Jr. Scholarship Fund.

The awards, which have been made since 1991, are financed with proceeds from sales of the former mayor’s marinara sauce. Winners are chosen on the basis of achievement and financial need by guidance counselors who Cianci said are “representative of high schools in Providence.”

Cianci, now a radio talk show host, said of the students: “The outstanding scholarship winners for this year are all well-rounded students who demonstrate great potential and promise, as well as financial need. I am proud of their achievements and am pleased to have the opportunity to provide some measure of financial assistance to them.”

Those students, with details provided by the scholarship fund, are: •Stephanie Cuevas, of Elmwood , will attend Bryant University. A graduate of Feinstein High School, she garnered many awards throughout her academic career. She served as a Senate page and participated in basketball and volleyball and enjoys reading and writing as well. During her junior year, she participated in a six-week internship at Johnson & Wales University, assisting the director of the culinary arts program. She was also a participant in the World Scholar Athlete Games.

•Coua Lee, a graduate of the W. B. Cooley Health & Science Academy, will attend the University of Connecticut. A member of the school’s Science Club, Young Doctors’ Club and a member of the girls basketball and volleyball teams, she intends to major in science. She was also the recipient of the Dr. Vincent A. Cianci Book Award for Excellence in Science this year.

•Maria Beltre, a graduate of Mount Pleasant High, will attend the University of Rhode Island. Ranked first in her class, she came to the United States from the Dominican Republic during her middle school years. Vice president of Mount Pleasant’s student government, a participant in outdoor track and field, crosscountry and volleyball, she had a multitude of accomplishments during her high school years, including volunteering for St. Patrick’s Church.

•Christopher Tucker, of Washington Park , will attend URI. A graduate of Hope High School’s Leadership Academy, he participated in Rhode Island College’s Upward Bound program and was a member of the United Methodist Church’s Youth Ministry. He also played high school soccer and ran indoor and outdoor track. He was born in Monrovia, Liberia, and spent time in a refugee camp in Ghana before coming to the United States. Inspired by a doctor in the camp who worked for the Peace Corps, his goal is to be a pediatrician.

•Jose C. Paz will attend the College of the Holy Cross. A graduate of E{+3} Academy, his dream is to pursue a career as an architect. The organizer of a Christmas toy drive at his school and a leader in helping his peers to stay out of trouble on the streets, he is proficient in English, Spanish and Italian.

•Holly Sanchez, a La Salle Academy graduate, will attend the University of Hartford. Active at St. Michael’s Church and maintaining a high grade-point average throughout her four years at La Salle, she enjoys basketball and photography, among her many other pursuits.

•Lilca Velasquez, of Mount Pleasant, is a graduate of Times{+2} Academy and will attend Providence College. A self-described “math geek,” she has excelled in advanced math, honors physics and chemistry as well as in English. She interned at the Naval Underwater Warfare Center in Middletown and counts kindergarten screening for Providence schools as among her community service projects.

•Annie Rodriguez, who graduated from the Providence Academy of lnternational Studies (PAIS), will attend URI . A member of her school’s graduation committee and the annual charity dance concert, Annie says that as a “…young Latina in the United States, I would like to pursue a career in psychology because I want to become someone important in the society.”

•Melinda Claudina Bulgin, of Washington Park, a Central High School graduate, will attend the University of Bridgeport. A member of the school’s volleyball and indoor track teams, she says that her “... admiration for science and medicine built my interest in becoming a crime scene examiner, which is one of my long-term goals.” She was a member of Central’s SADD program and volunteers at her church’s soup kitchen.

•Yoly R. Jimenez, of South Providence, graduated from the Textron Chamber of Commerce Academy and will attend Johnson & Wales University this fall where she plans to major in tourism and hospitality management. Achieving solid grades throughout her high school years and also tutoring children, she says, “I consider myself to be an example of what a determined young Hispanic woman can achieve. By achieving goals, I am able to become an example to future generations.”

•Julissa Barbadillo will attend Providence College. A Classical High School graduate who took advanced placement courses in Spanish 4 and environmental science, she was a member of the school’s Spanish Club, swim team and cheerleading squad. A member of the singing group of the New Covenant Ministries, Barbadillo, who was born in New York City to parents from Cuba, is also active in religious retreats at her church.

•Emily Perry of Classical High School will attend Williams College where she intends to pursue her interests in biology and geology. Her many projects during high school included volunteering for the Audubon Society, serving as a peer tutor for all four years of high school and volunteering at the Providence Public Library. Excelling in the many Advanced Placement courses she took at Classical, she was also a co-captain of the Classical High School Science Olympiad that won the state championship this year. Class valedictorian, she was the winner of the Dr. Vincent A. Cianci Book Award for Excellence in Science.

•Michael Bonatiti, selected by the Grand Lodge of Rhode Island, Order Sons of Italy, will attend the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) where he intends to pursue his interest in the sciences. A Classical High School graduate, he was a co-captain of the school’s Science Olympiad that won the state championship this year and went on to the national competition. A member of Classical’s Cum Laude Society and graduating fourth in his class, he was also the winner of the Rensselaer math and science awards.
