Providence shooting is 27th for August

PROVIDENCE — “Corey, run!”
With that shouted warning Thursday night, Corey Smith, 22, ran from his car as gunshots rang out on Cyr Street in Washington Park. One or two gunmen fired five times, the police were told, but they missed.
It was at least the 27th time that someone had been shot at in the city in August, the worst month for shootings in at least five years, according to the police. Twenty people were wounded and two killed.
To get away from the gunfire, Smith ran to his nearby home, at 1370 Eddy St., the police said.
The incident began at about 8:30 p.m., when Smith drove his mother’s car to Cyr Street, looking for his brother. After he left the car, someone drove it to Farragut Avenue, where it was found abandoned, grazed by one bullet and punctured by a second, the police said.
Two .380-caliber shell casings were found on the sidewalk in front of a house at 27 Cyr St.
It was not immediately clear whether Smith, his brother or both of them were the target of the shooter or shooters, and a police report did not say who shouted the warning to Smith.
Capt. Keith Tucker, commander of the police Youth Services Bureau, said yesterday that the police have two suspects but have made no arrest. He said he does not know why the attack occurred.
