Voters will decide local races in E. Providence, Portsmouth
01:00 AM EDT on Friday, September 5, 2008
When voters go to the polls for Tuesday’s primary, all the East Bay electoral action will be restricted to East Providence and Portsmouth.
Other communities have no local races, and turnout there is expected to be light.
All of the East Providence contests are for General Assembly seats.
In Senate District 18, three people are vying for the spot vacated by Paul Moura. The three Democrats who want the job are East Providence Mayor Isadore S. Ramos, former Martin Middle School principal Frank A. DeVall Jr., and former City Councilman and realtor Joseph A. Botelho Jr.
Tuesday’s winner will face off against Republican Marcel Robert and independent Lynn Vargas in November’s general election.
There are also three contestants in the Democratic primary for House District 63, where Rep. Henry C. Rose announced three months ago that he wouldn’t run.
The three are Rose’s nephew, Thomas A. Rose Jr., who is a member of the family that owns Rose Furniture on Warren Avenue; Roberto DaSilva, a Pawtucket police lieutenant; and George Russo, a retired engineering draftsman.
The winner of the contest will go against Republican Edmund R. Leather and independent Maryann A. Gobern Matthews.
The third East Providence contest is in House District 2, which includes part of Providence. Incumbent first-term representative and former Providence City Councilman David A. Segal faces a challenge from Richard R. Rodi. The winner will have no opposition in November.
In Portsmouth, Tuesday’s Democratic primary will also determine who sits on the School Committee, because the Republicans have not put up any candidates.
The five contenders for the three open seats are Marilyn A. King, Angela Volpicelli, Sylvia J. Wedge, Terri-Denise Cortvriend and Thomas Richard Vadney. The incumbents are Cortvriend and Wedge, the current chairwoman.
In the Town Council race, one Democratic candidate will be eliminated from a field of eight, leaving the remaining nominees to vie for seven seats on the November ballot against five Republicans and four independents.
The eight are David D. Croston, Albert E. Honnen Jr., Mark J. Katzman, Mary L. Correia, incumbents Leonard Barry Katzman, James Arthur Seveney, William E. West and the current council president, Dennis M. Canario. The Katzmans are brothers.
The polls will be open at 7 a.m. in Barrington, Bristol, East Providence and Portsmouth; at 8 a.m. in Middletown, Newport, Tiverton and Warren; and 9 a.m. in Little Compton. All close at 9 p.m.
