Shooting, stabbing probed in Providence

01:00 AM EDT on Monday, July 21, 2008

PROVIDENCE — The police are investigating a shooting in the Mount Hope neighborhood and a possible stabbing in South Providence.

A 17-year-old male whose name was withheld was shot at about 3 a.m. Saturday and driven by a relative or acquaintance to Miriam Hospital for treatment, according to the police. Sgt. Joseph Acampora said the teen’s injury was not life-threatening.

The shooting occurred in the vicinity of 159 Camp St.

About one-half hour earlier, the police responded to a reported disturbance in the parking lot of the CVS store at 960 Broad St. and found Jesus Castrillon, 26, of 19 Burke St., Pawtucket, bleeding heavily from severe cuts to his face, head and arm.

Detective Robert Melaragno noticed a car leaving the scene and stopped it nearby. A passenger in the back seat, identified as Juan Dejesus, 20, of 30½ Almy St., had a severe cut to his right hand and, according to a police report, was “covered in blood from head to toe.” He was treated at Rhode Island Hospital.

In searching the car, officers said they discovered a small bag of crack cocaine.

Six witnesses said they had just left Club Danubio and broke up a fight, but the police said the witnesses were unable or unwilling to shed any more light on what occurred.

While the police are treating the incident as an apparent stabbing, the origin of the victims’ wounds could not be immediately confirmed. Broken glass was found strewn near Castrillon.

Castrillon was admitted to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition.
