Community Briefs

Memorial Garden fundraiser: A memorial garden will be created on the grounds of North Smithfield Elementary School for Kaitlyn Ferra, the 7-year-old who lost her life while camping in New Hampshire. The Kaitlyn Ferra Memorial Garden will overlook the soccer field and the playground, which were two of Kaitlyn’s favorite activities.

The schematic of the memorial garden will be on display, along with a donation jar at upcoming North Smithfield Youth Soccer games at North Smithfield Elementary School from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 27, and Oct. 4, 11 and 25. Two fundraisers will also be held at The Village Haven on Oct. 27 and Nov. 15.

Contributions to the Katilyn Ferra Memorial Garden, may be mailed to NSES, 2214 Providence Pike, North Smithfield, R.I. 02896. Made checks payable to NSES with Ferra written on the memo line.

Recreation Department

Tennis program: North Smithfield Parks and Recreation is offering a free instructional tennis program for children and adults at the North Smithfield High School tennis courts. Instruction will be broken into the following groups: Children in grades 3 through 5 will meet Saturdays from 9 to 10:30 a.m.; children in grades 6 through 8 will meet Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to noon; and adults will meet Mondays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Anyone interested in attending the program must bring a tennis racket and a can of tennis balls. Saturday groups will meet for a period of five weeks starting Sept. 27. Monday groups will meet for a period of five weeks starting Sept. 29. For more information, call (401) 767-2200, ext. 343.

Library Programs

North Smithfield Public Library, 20 Main St., will host the next meeting of the romance novel discussion group, Monday at 6:30 p.m. The group will discuss Flirting with Danger, by Suzanne Enoch. New members are welcome.

The library will hold a free two-week workshop on altered scrapbooking for children in grades 4 to 12. The workshop will be held on Wednesdays, Oct. 8 to 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. Those interested in learning more about altered scrapbook can register by calling (401) 767-2780. Old books are required, but some supplies are required.

School Notes

North Smithfield Parent Teacher Organization (NSPTO) meets the first Monday of each month in the Halliwell School library. The first meeting will be held Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. All parents are welcome and encouraged to attend. The group will be forming committees for events planned throughout the year. MEANS (Music Education Association of North Smithfield) will meet Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. in the North Smithfield High School cafeteria. Parents of students in grades 6 through 12 who participate in concert band, jazz band, chamber choir or chorus are invited to attend. MEANS is a parent-run organization at the middle and senior high school that offers a way for parents to promote the music program. The organization sponsors fundraising activities throughout the year which help students to earn money for trips, festival and audition fees. Monthly meeting are held on the first Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at the high school.

Divorces

Christine M. (Gudz) Page, of Woonsocket, was granted a divorce from Jonathan F. Page, 109 Woonsocket Hill Rd., July 9.

Ronald P. Aubin, 76 Highview Ave., and Patricia L. (White) Aubin, of North Kingstown, were granted a divorce July 14.
