NORTH PROVIDENCE — The mayor swore in three members of the Fire Department yesterday, all graduates of the fire academy who joined the department in June.
• Philip Kennedy, of Coventry. A graduate of Coventry High School, he has a degree in general studies from the Community College of Rhode Island and comes from a family with a long history of firefighting and police work. His father, Donald Kennedy Jr., is a retired state police captain; his grandfather, Donald Kennedy Sr., is a retired Providence police sergeant; his uncle, Paul Kennedy, is the deputy chief of police in Providence; and his uncle, Edward Kennedy, is a Providence firefighter.
His brother, Joshua, is a West Warwick police officer. His parents, Donald and Wanda Kennedy, pinned his badge. Pinning on his badge were his parents, Donald and Wanda Kennedy.
•Giuseppe Ruggieri, of North Providence. He is a graduate of North Providence High School. He was joined yesterday by relatives and friends, including his grandmother, Natalina Conte, who pinned his badge. His parents are Anna Maria and Dazrio Ruggieri.
• Benjamin Maimoni, of North Providence. A graduate of North Providence High, Maimoni graduated from Newman University in Wichita, Kan. His parents are Philip and Christine Maimoni. His mother pinned his badge.
Mayor A. Ralph Mollis said he has always enjoyed swearing-in ceremonies during his 10 years in office because of the youth, energy and desire that recruits bring to their jobs.
After a written exam and agility test, applicants undergo eight weeks of intense training at the fire academy, where they learn fire prevention and control, how to deal with hazardous material and work in confined spaces, and how to handle rescues from water, ice, vehicle crashes, and electrical emergencies and property conservation.
The Rev. Bertil Anderson, the pastor of St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Warwick and the chaplain for the North Providence police and fire departments for 32 years, said his prayers are with every firefighter.
