NORTH PROVIDENCE — One of the two men charged with homicide in connection with last month’s double slaying of two young women in an apartment in Providence’s Silver Lake section has been charged in the armed robbery of a Waterman Avenue convenience store on June 5.
The North Providence police said Anthony J. Carter, 22, who is being held in the Polk County Jail in Florida on charges related to several robberies in Florida, has been identified by store owner David Marcoccio as the man who entered D. Marcoccio Food Mart at 105 Waterman Ave. with a multi-colored bandana covering part of his face, demanding money.
According to the police account, the shopowner refused the robber’s request even after the man lifted his shirt to expose what appeared to be a black semi-automatic pistol. When Marcoccio refused the request a second time, the police say, Carter yanked the register off the counter and ran out of the store with the owner in pursuit.
North Providence and Smithfield police officers conducted an immediate search of the area. But last week, while working closely with detectives from Cranston and Johnston, Detective Frank J. Delsanto began to focus on Carter.
Thinking he might be the “bald-headed” bandit they were looking for, the detective showed Marcoccio a number of photos. The shopowner immediately picked Carter out of the photo lineup, saying that even though the robber had most of his face covered during the robbery, he could still identify him through the distinctive features of his eyes.
The police said yesterday that it is still unknown when Carter, who, as of yesterday was still being held in the Polk County Jail, will be extradited from Florida. But they have already completed a District Court complaint charging him with first-degree robbery of the convenience store in North Providence.
Prior to being turned over to North Providence police, Carter is more likely to face prosecution, along with his alleged accomplice, Raymond Clements, 23, in the slaying of 20-year-old Heather V. Jesus and her 17-year-old cousin Amanda L. Sousa on June 14.
The body of Jesus, who was three months pregnant at the time of her death, and Sousa were found following an apartment fire at 375 Plainfield St., in Providence. The state medical examiner ruled the deaths a homicide, and the police say they believe that Carter and Clements murdered the young women and set the apartment on fire to hide the evidence.
