‘Tinted’ water in North Providence determined safe by supply board

NORTH PROVIDENCE — The Providence Water Supply Board informed Diane Echmalian yesterday that its testing of water samples this week from her home at 3 Malcolm St. showed it to be “within normal range” and that the levels of bacteria were well below what would pose a risk to humans.

Echmalian, who had publicly questioned the quality of the water after it developed a yellowish tint, said, despite the board’s finding, she doesn’t trust the results and she intends to avoid taking showers and use only water that has been bottled.

The 57-year-old fundraising consultant said that when she was informed of the finding, she wasn’t surprised. She said that 15 minutes before an investigator came by her house to draw the sample, a crew from the supply board opened a hydrant in the area to clear the line.

She said the tint went away for that brief period, “but right now, it’s yellow again.”

On Wednesday, Nancy Crosby, who is in charge of the water quality laboratory, refused to discuss the findings with The Journal, saying that she could only release the results to Echmalian. However, Echmalian said that in her phone conversation with Crosby yesterday, Crosby said “you may see some yellowness” as a result of demolition under way across the street from her at the former Rizzo car dealership on Mineral Spring Avenue.

Lowe’s has been demolishing the former dealership to make way for a new home improvement store, and is expected to begin blasting ledge on the property this year.
