NORTH PROVIDENCE — A 22-year-old man who allegedly broke into a house on Zipporah Street, only to be surprised when the owners returned and found him standing in the doorway, was arrested early Sunday on burglary and gun charges.

The police said William Negron, of 23 Woonasquatucket Ave., allegedly broke into the home of Paul and Laura Dexter through a kitchen window and made his way to the bedroom, where he allegedly stole expired credit cards, a woman’s diamond cross valued at $1,000 and two white gold crosses valued at $500.

The Dexters said that when they arrived home at 11:45 p.m. Saturday, they noticed that the back double doors were open and a man was standing in the doorway. When the man fled, Paul Dexter gave chase toward the Ricci School but gave it up when the man turned and said he had a gun.

Patrol officer James R. Watts searched the area a short time later and said he saw a man matching the burglar’s description in the area of Metcalf and Woonasquatucket avenues. Watts said the suspect looked extremely nervous and appeared to be attempting to move something in his pocket when the officer announced he was going to conduct a pat-down search. He said Negron then admitted he had .22-caliber revolver in his waist band.

At a hearing Monday in District Court, Negron was ordered held without bail at the Adult Correctional Institutions on charges of burglary, carrying a pistol without a license and possession of a dangerous weapon during a crime of violence.

His bail hearing is set for July 28.
