Electronics Recycling Day Saturday at high school
01:00 AM EDT on Wednesday, July 16, 2008
NORTH PROVIDENCE — Rhode Islanders can drop off old television sets and obsolete consumer electronics from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at a town-sponsored Electronics Recycling Day in the parking lot at North Providence High School.
Computers, televisions and other electronic equipment are deemed to be hazardous waste. Normally, TVs must be dropped off at the central landfill, in Johnston, and there’s a $5 fee.
Robert E. Nascimento, town recycling coordinator, said Saturday’s recycling day will spare homeowners a special trip to the landfill.
Office Recycling Solutions, of East Greenwich, will be on hand to accept electronic items so that the parts can be recycled, reused or disposed of as electronic waste. Other than an $8 charge for television sets (and $22 for television consoles), there is no cost.
“This is an ideal way for residents to get rid of old, unused or obsolete electronic equipment in an environmentally safe way,” Nascimento said. “As new technology is introduced, we tend to upgrade computers, DVD players and office equipment. Then we are faced with throwing the old equipment in the trash,” which is no longer legal in Rhode Island.
Other items that may be dropped off include computer towers, monitors, keyboards, accessories wires and plugs; laptop computers; video, audio, and DVD equipment and accessories; printers, copy machines and fax machines; telephones and cell phones, laser printers and copiers.
More information can be obtained by calling the North Providence recycling office at 232-0900, ext. 233.
