Candidates thinned out for Assembly, council seats

NORTH PROVIDENCE — With two more days to go before the Board of Canvassers determines whether prospective candidates for the fall elections have amassed enough signatures to secure a place on the ballot, the town has already lost one candidate for Town Council and two for General Assembly.

Kerry Brusini, director of the Board of Canvassers and Registration, said Joseph Muschiano, a frequent caller to talk-radio programs known to many as “Joe the Barber,” failed to take out the required nomination papers for Town Council that had to be filed last week.

Muschiano’s withdrawal leaves the council race in Dist. II to two other Democrats: former interim mayor and council president John Sisto Jr., who is looking for a political comeback after his loss last year to Mayor Charles Lombardi; and Joseph Giammarco, who ran unsuccessfully for council in the last two elections.

All three men are running for the seat currently held by Councilman John E. Fleming, the longtime chief of staff to former mayor and Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis, who is not seeking reelection.

In the races for General Assembly, Providence Democrat Sen. Dominick Ruggierio had two declared opponents, Democrat Raymond Izzo of 43 Russo St., Providence, and independent Gary Jerejian, of 86 Edgeworth Ave., Providence. Both failed to turn in papers to the Providence or North Providence boards of canvassers, leaving Republican Christine Spaziano as Ruggierio’s sole challenger.

In other Assembly races, Senate President Joseph A. Montalbano, D-Dist. 17, continues to face a challenge from an independent, Edward J. O’Neill of Lincoln, while Sen. Frank Ciccone, D-Dist. 7, faces challenges from Gregory P. Wright, an independent from North Providence, and from former Democratic Rep. Catherine Graziano of Providence.

In the House, incumbent Democrat Rep. Arthur J. Corvese continues to face a challenge from another Democrat, Paula DiNucci in Dist. 58, while incumbent Democratic Rep. Gregory Schooner faces a challenge in Dist. 54 from Republican Michael J. Rollins of North Providence.

And so far, Rep. Peter N. Wasylyk continues to faces a potential Democratic primary challenge in District 6 from Dirk Hennessey of Providence.

Brusini said all the other candidates for Town Council and School Committee are in the running. They include eight candidates who were endorsed last month by the Democratic Town Committee:

The candidates are Mayor Charles Lombardi and Councilman Mansuet Giusti, who are running unopposed; Sisto in his race for council in District II; Councilman Raymond Douglas, who is opposed by Republican John M. Puleo in District III; and School Committee Chairman Vito Martinelli, who is being challenged in District I by Janet Hooper, Angela M. Samatis and Gina M. Picard.

Other endorsed Democrats include Tami Leva who is up against Robert H. Morris in a potential Democratic primary battle for School Committee in District II; incumbent School Committee member Helen Reall, who is being challenged in a potential primary in District III by Paul K. Burke of the North Providence Taxpayers Association; and School Committee member Stephen D. Palmieri who is being challenged for another two-year seat in District III by independent Anthony J. Tufano.
