NORTH PROVIDENCE — The Town Hall is decked with pink ribbons this week as part of the nationwide effort to support breast cancer awareness.

Mayor Charles Lombardi said he was pleased that the North Providence Town Hall is the first town or city hall in the state to be decorated with pink ribbons. The mayor and his wife, Carol, recently crafted them from pink vinyl.

Lombardi said he felt it was appropriate, given that that there are many women in town who have been touched by the disease, and that the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation has its store, Cotton Candy, on Mineral Spring Avenue in North Providence.

He noted that he and his wife will participate tomorrow in the Flames of Hope — A Celebration of Life at WaterFire, including a torch procession from the State House steps organized by the Gemma foundation.

His office is also encouraging citizens to show their support by wearing “string of hope” bracelets that can be purchased at Town Hall for $1, or “live, love, hope” rose-quartz bead bracelets for $10.

The mayor has also announced that next Friday, Oct. 17, will be a “Wear Pink Day” at Town Hall and other municipal buildings to show support for the Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Employees will be asked to dress in pink and make a donation.

Our Lady of Fatima Hospital has also announced that, in recognition of the month, it will take appointments for mammograms for town employees and spouses.
