NORTH PROVIDENCE — A 40-year-old Centredale man, wanted by Woonsocket police for allegedly shoplifting an MP3 player from the Sears store on Diamond Hill Road and attempting to run over a loss prevention officer, was arrested and charged by North Providence police with assault, disorderly conduct, receiving stolen goods and resisting arrest.

The police said that after tracing the car used in the Woonsocket incident to 1 Centerdale Ave., they encountered George St. Mary on the street outside his home.

The police said a scuffle ensued as they tried to place the suspect in a cruiser. Officers said that inside the cruiser he kicked the door and at the police station he grabbed the arm of one officer and would not let go until he was subdued with pepper spray.

St. Mary, who was found in possession of the MP3 player, was arraigned and released on $1,000 personal recognizance to the Woonsocket police,

In other police activity:

•Patrick Perry, 28, of 49 Seamans St., was arrested Monday on a charge of obtaining money under false pretenses. Mary Lombardo, of Nipmuc Trail, said she had given Perry a $600 check on July 11 to replace doors at her residence, but that he never did the work.

Detective Charles Fish said that when he spoke with the Perry, the contractor told him that he had been hospitalized at Roger Williams Hospital and he expected to do the work once he got out. Fish said he checked with the hospital and found that Perry was not a patient.
