Suicide prevention volunteers sought: As the number of available psychiatric beds and outpatient mental health service slots continues to decline in Rhode Island, more and more citizens will depend on The Samaritans Crisis Hotline/Listening Line for care.
To meet current and anticipated needs, The Samaritans is seeking new volunteers and the return of former volunteers to help fill the gap and to ensure callers of all ages to know someone cares and that there are options to suicide.
Because this volunteer experience requires exceptional listening and befriending skills, all Samaritan volunteers must be 18 year or older, out of high school, participate in 21 hours of classroom training, mentoring by experienced volunteers and a minimum commitment of 200 hours of community service within one year. Volunteers agree to a criminal reference and professional reference check and to the terms of volunteer agreement forms.
Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking volunteers are encouraged to apply.
An introductory meeting to explore volunteer opportunities will be held on Tuesday from 6 to 7 p.m. Classes will be held Sept. 4, 9, 11, 16, 18 and 23, from 6 to 9 p.m.
Training workshops are held at the First Unitarian Church on Benevolent Street, a community partner in The Samaritans’ volunteer recruitment effort.
For information, contact The Samaritans at (401) 272-4243, or visit www.samaritansri.org.
