Graduation: More than 80 youths from Providence will graduate from the Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence’s Beloved Community Summer Jobs Program tomorrow from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Providence Academy of International Studies (PAIS) cafetorium, 182 Thurbers Ave.
The program provides employment opportunities, professional development and nonviolence training to youths between the ages of 14 and 19.
For eight weeks, they have worked at local businesses and nonprofit agencies representing some of the fastest growing occupations including hospitality, healthcare, food services, recreation, social assistance and housing maintenance. This program is made possible in part by support from Workforce Solutions of Providence/Cranston.
The Institute for Study and Practice of Nonviolence teaches by word and example the principles and practices of nonviolence, and fosters community that addresses potentially violent situations with nonviolent solutions. In 2006, the Institute was named a “best practice” by the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

An after party will be held at Snookers with a performance by Mustang Cobra. This match will determine which teams will face off at the championship bout on Sept. 19.
Scholarship recipient: The Community College of Rhode Island recently selected Louisette G. Lopes of Providence as the recipient of the 2008 Warwick Branch of the International Sunshine Society Scholarship.
PGMC: With the start of its 2008-09 Season, the Providence Gay Men’s Chorus (PGMC) announced two new staff positions. Original PGMC member Ray Sirico has been named the group’s first general manager, and Roberta Adams has accepted the position of PGMC development coordinator.
Sirico has been with the PGMC since its beginning as a 12-member group in 1995. Sirico has served on the PGMC board of directors for more than half of that time and, in 2007, stepped away from singing to devote his time to helping with the administrative needs of the chorus.
Adams comes to the PGMC after a decade of working in arts administration, education and outreach. Past positions have included director of education and public programs at the Delaware Art Museum and, from 2005 to 2006, she served as interim director of development at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts.
Both Sirico and Adams have begun their new roles with the PGMC as the chorus begins its 13th season. Open rehearsal for 2008-09 will be held at Beneficent Church, 300 Weybosset St., Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Interested singers should simply show up at the rehearsal. E-mail the PGMC at info@ProvGMC.org for information.
