NORTH KINGSTOWN — A meeting to introduce Southern Rhode Island at Home Inc. — an association of people over 62 who hope to remain in their own homes as they age, with a source of service providers to call upon if they are in need — will be held at the North Kingstown Free Library at 5 p.m. Monday.

Among the initiative’s organizers are Dan and Mary Paul Davis, and Sandy Taylor, all of North Kingstown, who will explain how a group of local people came together last year to bring the concept to southern Rhode Island.

They and several other southern Rhode Island residents applied for and received two $5,000 grants from the Rhode Island Foundation that covered the expenses involved in incorporating and filing for tax-exempt status. The grants also provided for liability insurance, the establishment of a Web site and the production of a brochure, they said.

Their corporation, Southern Rhode Island at Home Inc., or SRI at Home Inc., is an alternative to retirement and assisted-living communities, they said. They hope to establish membership groups limited to 30 or 40 people in various areas of southern Rhode Island, with North Kingstown being one of those areas. Some services to be supplied will be voluntary; others will be through referral.

Volunteers will be available to provide transportation, check-ups to house-bound people, shopping, small household repairs, watering plants when the person is away, reading and visitation. Referrals will be made for home repairs, garden and lawn care, snow shoveling, in-home nonmedical care and housecleaning.

Davis said SRI at Home is a “grass-roots” organization similar to groups in other states that fall under a variety of names, each with its own set of rules, fees and missions.

According to information provided by local organizers, the primary function of the group is not to provide services, unless they can be performed by volunteers, but to be a source of referral. The network is to be funded by members, for members.

Members, who are 62 or older, pay a $50 registration fee, plus annual dues of $40.

The library is at 100 Boone St., North Kingstown. Call (401) 294-3306. To contact SRI at Home, call (401) 295-7872 or check www.sriathome.org
