Voters in generous mood approve all bond questions

NORTH KINGSTOWN — Voters in a spending mood yesterday agreed to borrow $14.5 million for new police, fire and senior buildings.
About $2 million will be spent on a two-story building that will connect the police and fire stations on Post Road. Officers and firefighters say they need more space for a central dispatch area, storage and an emergency response station. Another $2.5 million will be used to build a new fire station, possibly on Route 138.
Voters also approved a $4-million loan for a two-story senior center, which will be built behind the current center which is housed in an aging Victorian home near Town Beach. Officials say the old center leaks, needs paint and is too small. Elderly residents and others plan to raise another $1 million for the project, which includes a walking trail and a new bandstand and sports field.
Voters also agreed to borrow $2 million to provide low-interest loans to homeowners who need to repair or replace failing septic systems.
Not all the votes were for buildings. Voters approved a $4-million loan to save 550 acres of farm and other land threatened by developers.
And they approved three proposals that don’t need loans: a municipal court; a recall provision to allow voters to kick out bad officials; and a policy that will allow the council to appoint a School Committee member if a position becomes vacant.
