01:00 AM EDT on Monday, July 2, 2007
NEWPORT — Coast Guard crews continued to search yesterday for a Watertown, Mass., man who disappeared Saturday afternoon while spearfishing from a kayak off Brenton Point.
A Coast Guard cutter patrolled the area throughout the night Saturday, with helicopters, state Department of Environmental Management personnel and divers returning at first light yesterday, the Coast Guard reported.
The crews searched as far as 15 miles south of where Phillip Stevens, 59, was last seen.
Stevens had planned to meet his wife around 3:30 p.m. Saturday. When he failed to show up, she called the Coast Guard.
Stevens’ kayak and his spear were found on the shore.
Stevens was said to be fishing about 20 yards from the shore, in about 14 feet of water.
