Memorial service tomorrow for sailboat crew lost at sea

01:00 AM EDT on Friday, May 9, 2008

A memorial service will be held tomorrow for the crew of Flying Colours, a 54-foot sailboat that disappeared a year ago with sailors with Rhode Island ties.

Flying Colours vanished after sailing into Tropical Storm Andrea en route from the Caribbean to Annapolis, Md. Its emergency beacon activated on May 7 and then went dead four hours later. On board was Christine Grinavic, 27, a Cumberland native and graduate of the University of Rhode Island; Jason Franks, 34, who has family in North Kingstown; Rhiannon Borisoff, 22, who came from Oregon and was active in Newport’s sailing community, and Patrick “Trey” Topping III, 39, of Newport, who was the captain.

At 10 a.m. tomorrow, a memorial service for the four lost sailors will be held upstairs at the Seaman’s Church Institute, 18 Market Square, Newport. Family members and friends of the sailors will speak at the event.

Flying Colors was overtaken by Andrea about 160 miles off North Carolina. The Coast Guard rescued crews from three other vessels caught in the storm, which whipped up 40-foot seas. The Coast Guard searched for the vessel and its crew for six days but after finding no signs of either suspended the operation.
