Hallgring to be sworn in today

Newport’s next fire chief, Harry J. Hallgring Jr., left, confers with Fire Marshal Bobby Sullivan yesterday. Hallgring, 49, a member of the Newport Fire Department for 26 years and the chief in Little Compton until his recent resignation, will be sworn in today, at 10 a.m. at City Hall. He succeeds Edward “Ned” W. McCarthy Jr., who retired in October after seven years as chief.
