Newport library to reopen today after false bomb report
01:00 AM EST on Friday, November 10, 2006
NEWPORT _ A bomb scare at the Newport Public Library yesterday afternoon prompted library officials to close the building for the rest of day, according to the police.
Around 2 p.m., a library employee found a note in the book drop indicating there was a bomb in the building, said Lt. Michael Brennan. The building was evacuated and library staff and police searched the building. A bomb-sniffing dog from another police department was summoned to search the premises.
Nothing was found and the police concluded it was a hoax, Brennan said. The search was completed by 4 p.m., but library officials opted not to reopen the building for the remainder of the day. A telephone recording at the library indicated that the building would reopen this morning.
