Newport police keep ears tuned to motorcycles, car radios

NEWPORT — Keep it quiet, music lovers and motorcycle riders. Starting this weekend, the Newport Police Department will step up its enforcement of ordinances directed at too-loud motorcycles and car radios.
“Every year we do this,” said Lt. William T. Fitzgerald Jr., a spokesman for the department. “Basically, it’s to get the message out that loud motorcycles and radios are not going to be tolerated. It’s a big issue for residents.”
State regulations prohibit drivers from modifying vehicle exhausts to amplify their sound. According to city ordinances, vehicles can not emit music that’s “plainly audible” from 75 feet between the hours of 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. or from 25 feet between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.
The stepped-up enforcement of the noise rules will continue throughout the summer and will be coordinated by the department’s community and traffic services unit.
